Getting a lawyer can be difficult but the state of New York has simplified it. The New York State Bar Association launched a new online portal for those who are looking for a lawyer. The service is confidential and available 24 hours a day. The service is called Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) and its aimed at lowering the pressure people face when they need a lawyer.
Those who seek a lawyer will be paired up with layers who are in good legal standing and whose credentials have been verified by the New York State Bar Association. The new service was developed in partnership with Legal.io, which provides referral management technology for the legal field.
Jeremy Goldstein is one of the layers you can be paired up with through LRIS. He is currently a partner at Jeremy Goldstein & Associates. He spent 14 years as a partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz. He originally started out as an associate at Shearman and Sterling LLP.
Goldstein has been part of many of the country’s largest corporate transactions of the last 10 years including Goodrich, Goldman Sachs, Verizon Wireless, Bank of America and Phillips Petroleum. Goldstein is the leading expert on executive compensation issues.
The initial referrals are free but if a person talks to an attorney, there is a $35 fee for the original 30-minute consult. However, there are certain exceptions that are made if the issue involves personal injury, social security, medical, veterans and military law, and unemployment.
The New York State Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service has been around for 35 years and has been matching clients with lawyers forever. In 2016, they handled more than 10,000 calls from the public. The New York State Bar Association is the largest state bar association in the country and was started in 1876.
